Comments: These designations can cost you a lot of money. For example, you can’t make alterations, such as installing new windows or changing the facade of the building, without approval from the federal or local Landmark Commission. These agencies can also force you to use the same type of windows that were historically used, and you may need to go through hoops trying to find similar designs and materials.

Real-Life Example:

The developer Abe Hirschfeld once bought a parcel of buildings, which included a small, dilapidated building inhabited by squatters. Hirschfeld didn’t know what to do with the property until his architect informed him that the building was a Stanford White Building. Stanford White was a legendary architect from the turn of the century’s Gilded Age. To live in a Stanford White building was the epitome of taste and refinement. If the building could be brought back to even a semblance of its original condition, it would substantially increase in value. This is what Mr. Hirschfeld did, in fact, do.
